UNITED NATIONS SPECIAL RAPPORTEUR (UNSR) IRENE KHAN WILL BE VISITING THE PHILIPPINES ON JAN. 23- FEB. 2, 2024

According to the information I found, United Nations Special Rapporteur (UNSR) Irene Khan will be visiting the Philippines from January 23 to February 2. Her visit is focused on examining the situation of the rights to freedom of opinion and expression in the country.

 

During her visit, UNSR Khan will engage in cooperation and dialogue with various stakeholders, including civil society, human rights organizations, media organizations, experts, academics, and individuals. She has invited them to share any information on the national normative framework, freedom of the media, internet freedom, and freedom of expression.

 

Irene Khan assumed office as the UNSR on freedom of opinion and expression on August 1, 2020, becoming the first woman to hold this position since its establishment in 1993. She is internationally recognized as an advocate for human rights, gender equality, and social justice. Born in Bangladesh, she studied at Manchester University and Harvard Law School. Prior to her current role, Khan worked for 21 years at the UN headquarters and in various country operations, including Chief of Mission in India and Deputy Director of the Division of International Protection. She has received several awards, including the Sydney Peace Prize in 2006 for her contributions to human rights.

 

It's important to note that the visit of UNSR Khan is separate from the supposed investigation being done by the International Criminal Court (ICC). The visit aims to examine the situation of freedom of opinion and expression in the Philippines and highlight the country's commitment to human rights and freedom of the press.
